The original Spice Girls were the women who went to the garden tomb on the morning of Easter Sunday. This skit was written for a children's talk on Easter Sunday. Not all of the actors have speaking parts, but they all need to be enthusiastic in both dressing up outrageously and over-exaggerated miming!
N: Narrator
P: Posh Spice (Joseph, Angel 1)
Sc: Scary Spice (Angel 2, Jesus)
B: Baby Spice (Mary)
Sp: Sporty Spice (Salome)
G: Ginger Spice (Mary)
Narrator: Who can tell me what today is? And why is it special? What happened on this day?
Today, of course, is Easter Sunday and it's the day on which Jesus rose from the dead. He had been killed on Good Friday and placed in a tomb, and on Sunday some of His friends went to His tomb with some spices. In those days, they would wrap the body in spices and strips of cloth before the person was buried. But when they got there Jesus wasn't there. This morning I'm going to tell you the story of what happened that first Easter Sunday morning, and I've asked some friends to come along and act out the role of those women who went to Jesus' tomb with the spices. (Louder) Oh women with the spices, where are you? Women with the spices?
(Music begins, Spice Girls run/dance in from out the back)
N: What are you doing?
P: We're the Spice Girls. Can't you tell?
N: But what are you doing here?
P: You told us to come and help you out by acting as the Spice Girls.
N: NO I said I wanted you to come and help by acting as the women who went to Jesus' tomb with the spices to prepare His body for burial.
Other Spice Girls: Ohh oops! Sorry! (etc)
P: Well, we ARE the Spice Girls, so we still might be able to help you. I mean look here, we've got some cinnamon, and some chilli powder and some sesame seeds, and even some ground coriander seeds! We can help, honest we can. We can be the Spice Girls
N: The women with the spices
P: Spice Girls, spice women, whatever
N: Well, I'm not too sure but what else am I going to do? Okay, you guys can help me!
[Spice Girls come up on stage and act out ALL the parts as N narrates the story. Feel free to interrupt the story and ad lib etc]
N: Okay. Well on the first Easter Sunday morning, Mary - who wants to be Mary? Okay, Mary, and Salome and the other Mary got up really early in the morning and took some spices they had prepared
P (holding up spices - aside to kids): See I told you!
N: They took the spices they had prepared and they went to the tomb to anoint Jesus' body. They were very sad because their friend and Master Jesus had been killed. But they wanted to go and do this last thing they could for Him. So, they walked to the rocky hills on the outskirts of town, to the place where their other friend P.
P: Can I be P? Can I? Can I?
N: Well, you can but you don't actually get to do anything! Okay, their other friend P, he had put Jesus in his own tomb, which was like a big cave cut in a rock. Then he took a really, really, really big stone and rolled it over the entrance to the tomb, covering it right up.
P (who has been acting this out - to kids): See, I DO get to do something!
N: As the women walked along, they were wondering how on earth they were going to move this great big huge ginormous stone.
B: How on earth are we going to move this great big huge ginormous stone????
N: But when they got to a place where they could see the tomb, they saw that the stone wasn't there!! Someone had rolled it away! They were amazed! They couldn't believe their eyes! They were astounded! They ran toward the tomb wondering what had happened. They thought maybe someone had stolen Jesus' body! They were worried, and upset, and confused and a little bit disorientated and an awful lot bewildered. All of a sudden, two men with clothes that shone really bright like lightning appeared beside them.
Sc: Yay! See, you did need us all - good thing there are FIVE Spice Girls
N: These two men appeared all of a sudden and then these two men they, they, they (actors ready to do something amazing) well, actually, they just kind of stood there really! But the women, they were afraid, and frightened and scared and a little bit upset and an awful lot anxious. And the men looked so bright and so shining that the women fell on their faces in front of them. Faces to the ground, that's right. They bowed down almost as if they were worshipping. But the men were having none of that. One of them said, "Don't be afraid!"
P: Don't be afraid
N: I know who you're looking for, you're looking for Jesus!
P: I know who you're looking for, you're looking for Jesus!
N: But why are you looking for the living among the dead?
P: But why are you looking for someone who is alive in a place like this where all you will find is dead people?
N: He is not here; he is risen!
P: He's not here; he's risen!
N: The women couldn't quite take all of this in but before they could say or do anything else, the angel said "Go quickly and tell his disciples: He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see Him."
P: Run! Quick! Go and tell all the other people who hang around Jesus all the time Jesus has risen from the dead, He's alive and He's alive and He's alive (to N): Well at least I remembered the most important bit.
N: He's alive and He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see Him.
P: Yeah, he's alive and He's gone to Galilee, so if you go there, you'll see Him.
N: Once the women heard this, they were off. Leaving the two men in their dust, they turned and ran away to find all the other disciples. They were still afraid, but they were also really, really excited, and filled with joy! They ran and ran and then all of sudden Jesus appeared in front of them. Like He had come out of thin air. And he said, "Greetings"
Sc: Hello!
N: The women couldn't believe it! Actually, that's a silly expression. They could believe it and they did, but it was pretty amazing! They ran to Jesus and knelt at His feet and worshipped Him. Then Jesus said to them, "Don't be afraid."
Sc: Don't be afraid.
N: "Go and tell my disciples to go to Galilee and there they will see me."
Sc: Keep going, find all the others, and tell them to go to Galilee and I'll meet you all there.
N: And then all of a sudden, just as quickly as he had appeared, Jesus was gone. But the women weren't afraid any more, because they knew for sure now that Jesus was really alive, and so they ran off to tell everyone they could!
[All Spice Girls run to kids and then adults saying, "He's alive! He's alive!]
N: Well, that's what happened on the first Easter Sunday morning - more or less.
P: And you couldn't have done it without us!
N: No I couldn't! Because although they probably weren't widely known as the "Spice Girls", these women with the spices were actually the first people to see Jesus alive after He had risen from the dead! So that makes them pretty cool probably even more cool than those other Spice Girls! And because Jesus rose from the dead that first Easter Sunday, He is still alive today which is why we still celebrate Easter Sunday because Jesus is alive!
