By Walt Scheiman
A dialogue (sort of) between one person and a spotlight (symbolizing the light of God). He keeps trying to move into the dark, but is followed by the light until he realizes he can not escape God.
Person
(ENTERS IN THE DARK)
Actor: Hey hey, got away with it again. I am so clever! I get to do what I want and no one is any the wiser. I don't know why I worry about it so much, after all I am the only one who knows.
LIGHT COMES ON
Actor: (squinting into the light) Wha . . . What the . . . Hey, who's there? Get that thing away from me.
HE WALKS INTO A DARK PART OF THE STAGE AS THE LIGHT GOES OUT
Actor: That's better. Had me worried for a moment. Thankfully no one knows but me. After all, is it really a sin if I am the only one who knows.
LIGHT COMES ON
Actor: Hey, what did I tell you about that light? For the last time, move it.
HE WALKS TO A DARK PART OF THE STAGE AS THE LIGHT GOES OUT.
Actor: This is getting a bit freaky. You'd think someone was on to me.
LIGHT COMES ON
Actor: This has gone far enough. Just who do you think you are anyhow? God? (pause) Oh! (Pause) Well don't think for one minute it makes any difference to me one way or the other if you know what I do. Now leave me alone.
HE WALKS INTO A DARK PART OF THE STAGE AS THE LIGHT GOES OUT
Actor: He thinks I care if He is watching. Well I don't! They way I see it, if you sin and it affects another person... well, sure. that's just wrong. But, this little tiny, ittsy bitsy sin did not affect anyone. So it's OK. It is as simple as that.
LIGHT COMES ON
Actor: Stop it
HE RUNS INTO A DARK PART OF THE STAGE AS THE LIGHT GOES OUT
Actor: If you won't stop bothering me, I'll hide from you. Try to find me now.
LIGHT SWEEPS THE STAGE AND EVENTUALLY FINDS HIM HIDING IN HIS HIDING PLACE
Actor: Aaaagh!
HE RUNS INTO A DARK PART OF THE STAGE AS THE GOES OUT
Actor: Stop bugging me. Don't waste your time. I know what you are doing. Putting people in my way all the time. I don't need this. Admit, repent, accept, new life. I know it all. I am just not worth it. (Pause) Stop it. Will you please just stop it.
LIGHT COMES ON
Actor: Why do I feel like you are following me?
HE BEGINS SLOW WALK ACROSS STAGE AS LIGHT FOLLOWS HIM
Actor (Walking) My sin is my sin. No, no, no... following me is not going to make one little bit of difference. You think if you follow me that I will just give up and repent. Well, you are wrong. I told you, I am not worth it.
HE STOPS AND ADRESSES THE LIGHT
Actor: Why are you doing this? Why do you care? I can't stop what I'm doing. I can't! I know it hurts You. I know it, but I can not stop. So just stop caring about me. I don't want you caring about me. Please just stop it, please.
LIGHT FADES
Actor: Hey, where did you go? You mean, you are giving up on me? Letting me live the way I want? Good. That's what I wanted. So . . . good. (Pause) Wow, it is dark. I can't see my hand in front of my face. But this is what I wanted . . . I guess.
HE BEGINS TO WALK AWAY, TRIPS AND LANDS ON FLOOR
Actor: Ow . . . that's going to leave a mark.
HE BEGINS TO WALK AWAY, TRIPS AND LANDS ON FLOOR AGAIN
Actor: Ow . . . Well, maybe just a little light would be nice. (stays dark) Did you hear me? I would like to have a little light. (stays dark) You know, it would be nice if we could have a little relationship. I'll just do my thing now and then, and when I'm not we can pal around a little.
HE BEGINS TO WALK AWAY, TRIPS AND LANDS ON FLOOR AGAIN
Actor: OW. I don't like this at all, not at all. Just a little light. (stays dark) PLEASE just a little. (stays dark) I don't like this. I don't like the dark. I want to like myself. Okay God, I want a relationship with You. I am sorry for my sins. I know you and your Son. He is my Savior. Please do not give up on me.
LIGHT FADES UP ON HIM
Actor: (still on ground) God? You didn't give up on me. (getting up) You know, I am feeling pretty good about myself, for the first time ever. It's like I have been reborn! (to light) I guess that's the point, huh? (exits as light follows him out the door) Where do you want to go today? You let me know, I'm with you all the way. Did I tell you I love you . . . (continues as he exits).
