Things That Make You Go "Hmm!"
By Glenn A. Hascall
Summary
A script that follows an all-too-familiar scenario; a man is reading a
newspaper when his wife is trying to talk to him. Sure, there's talking,
but is he really listening?
Characters
Man and Wife (Probably 35 years of age or older)
Script
(Husband walks in and sits down centre stage. Gets comfortable, opens a
newspaper and begins reading. He continues to read throughout entire script.
Wife walks in and sits down looking thoughtful.)
WIFE: You know, I've been thinking.
HUSBAND: (Thoughtful) Hmm.
WIFE: I'm worried about Alex.
HUSBAND: Hmm?
WIFE: You know he had to stay in for recess this week because he didn't
get his work done.
HUSBAND: Hmm.
WIFE: I know what you mean. If we're too strict he might rebel, but
if we let his behavior go unchallenged things might just get worse.
HUSBAND: Hmm.
WIFE: Then there's Carley, she's moving into adolescence and I'm not
sure how to handle it. She can be the sweetest young lady and then it seems
as if her world is ending. There's just no talking sense to her when she
gets like that.
HUSBAND: Hmm.
WIFE: (Pause) You're right, we've weathered other storms, (Pause) we'll
get through this one too I suppose.
HUSBAND: Hmm.
WIFE: (Express with genuine gratitude) You know, I just want you to
know how much I appreciate you. You're a terrific listener. I feel a lot
better about things.
HUSBAND: Hmm.
WIFE: Yeah, I really feel like I'll make it through now. I'm sure glad
I married you. (Walks off stage smiling)
HUSBAND: Hmm. (Continues to read for a few seconds and then closes
the paper after wife is off stage). I'm sorry dear (notices she isn't around
- then says slowly) did you say something?
