Nicodemus the distant disciple

Details
Vic Cooper
Scripts Since 2007

User Rating: 5 / 5

Summary: Based on John 3, this play follows Nicodemus as he progresses from a self- righteous proud Pharisee to become a follower of Jesus Christ. It has humour at the right time and deep convicting grief which finalizes in joy at the risen Lord. We are taking liberties in concluding that he became a believer; however, the fact that he defended Jesus before the Sanhedrin and he and Joseph claimed the body of Christ points in that direction. Also, historic tradition says he was baptized later on. Nicodemus begins with a gruff total rejection of Jesus, but God works thru the Holy Spirit, his family, and the scriptures to change the stony heart of this Pharisee. The play covers the time from the first miracles of Christ to His resurrection. First written for marionettes, it proved to be a powerful tool for conviction.

Summary: Linda O’Neill, the founder and owner of Just Like New, a chain of second-hand clothing stores, discovers that a condominium towers building is being planned for the location of one of her stores. The development is the pet project of developer Raina Whitman who will stop at nothing, including bribes, dirty tricks and spiteful tactics to pursue her idea of urban renewal. Through her faith in God and the support of Jake, her husband, O’Neill opposes the new development, persevering through all of Whitman’s tactics to push her out early. When it looks like the development will be approved, O’Neill tells her husband she feels God is leading her to set up a face-to-face meeting with Whitman to explain why the development isn’t needed. Following the sounds of separate car accidents, the two women meet in what O’Neill suggests is a “waiting room” between heaven and hell.

Most Excellent Theophilus

Scripts Since 2007
29 January 2018

User Rating: 5 / 5

Summary: Theophilus, a grieving widower, receives the Gospel message from his physician, Dr. Luke (who has just rescued him from his attempted suicide). When alone, Theophilus talks to his deceased wife, Teodora. Ten months earlier, lying in her death bed (seen in flashback), Teodora exhorted Theophilus to believe in Jesus. Until that morning when her fatal disease claimed her, Teodora’s deep faith in the Lord was unbeknown to him. Now, enabled by the Holy Spirit to truly hear Teodora’s testimony, Theophilus vows to her that he will learn all that he can about Jesus. While reading Dr. Luke’s sacred narrative, he pauses often to share his thoughts with Teodora. During what will be the most important night of his life, the “living Word” opens the mind and heart of Theophilus to God the Holy Spirit’s ministry of conviction at work in his soul. He discerns that he is being asked to make his decision about Jesus’ calling on his life (“Who do you say that I am?”) As sunlight illuminates his bed chamber, the audience witnesses Theophilus’ transformation from a bitter and hopeless man into a joyful new believer trusting in God’s promise of eternal life: lived in that place prepared for him (and his Teodora, he is now certain) by Jesus Himself; fulfilling His Father’s perfect will for His adopted-by-grace human sons and daughters, dwelling with God in a community of true peace and great joy.

Summary

Eight-year-old Princess Irene lives a lonely life in a castle in a wild, desolate, mountainous kingdom, with only her nursemaid, Lootie, for company. Her father, the king, is normally absent, and her mother is dead. Unknown to her, the nearby mines are inhabited by a race of goblins, long banished from the kingdom and now anxious to take revenge on their human neighbours. One rainy day, the princess explores the castle and discovers a beautiful, mysterious lady, who identifies herself as Irene's namesake and great-great-grandmother. The next day, Princess Irene persuades her nursemaid to take her outside. After dark they are chased by goblins and rescued by the young miner, Curdie, whom Irene befriends. At work with the rest of the miners, Curdie overhears the goblins talking, and their conversation reveals to Curdie the secret weakness of goblin anatomy: they have very soft, vulnerable feet. Curdie sneaks into the Great Hall of the goblin palace to eavesdrop on their general meeting, and hears that the goblins intend to flood the mine if a certain other part of their plan should fail. A week later Irene loses her way up the mountain; whereupon the light from her great-great-grandmother's tower leads her home, where her great-great-grandmother gives Irene a ring attached to a thread invisible except to herself, which thereafter connects her constantly to home.

When Curdie explores the goblins' domain, he is discovered by the goblins and stamps on their feet with great success; but when he tries to stamp on the Queen's feet she is uninjured due to her stone shoes. The goblins imprison Curdie, thinking he will die of starvation; but Irene's magic thread leads her to his rescue. Irene takes Curdie to see her great-great-grandmother and be introduced; but she is only visible to Irene. Curdie later learns that the goblins are digging a tunnel in the mines towards the king's palace, where they plan to abduct the Princess and marry her to goblin prince Harelip. Curdie goes to warn the palace guards about this, but is imprisoned instead and contracts a fever through a wound in his leg, until Irene's great-great-grandmother heals the wound. Meanwhile, the goblins break through the palace floor and come to abduct the princess; but Curdie escapes from his prison room and stamps on the goblins' feet. Upon the goblins' retreat, Irene is believed a captive; but Curdie follows the magic thread to her refuge at his own house, and restores her to the king. When the goblins flood the mines, the water enters the palace, and the goblins are defeated.

User Rating: 5 / 5

“The Prayer Dancer” is a Christian stage play for the entire family that is driven by the art of dance, rather than song. The voices of the four women you will encounter - Rachel, Amber, “Peaches”/Tamara and Joy – echo the words that I have spoken, felt, and lived over the years. Within three acts, this piece seeks to present a realistic portrayal of four women on their Christian journey, who face issues of abuse, the inability to conceive, wavering commitment to God, and insecurity about God’s will, plan, and purpose for their lives. While exploring their relationship with Christ and each other, they are bound together by doubt, fear, anger, and faith. Throughout the play, dance will help tell the story, express emotions, and demonstrate a unique form of praise and worship.

Christmas Uncut

Details
St Thomas’s Church
Scripts Since 2007
13 September 2012

Summary: Christmas uncut is a re-telling of the most wonderful story of all time, of how God came to Earth that first Christmas. We wrote, then performed it at St Thomas’s Church, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire, UK, on Sunday morning, 18th December 2011. It would need some adaption to your situation, but essentially the stories are timeless. It is aimed at everyone from about 7 to 100+. It is ‘uncut’ to help us appreciate what actually happened here on Earth, when God became vulnerable and shared our vulnerability, as we shall see. But the story does not end there, because when ‘Emmanuel’, God with us, comes then life is not the same again.
Style: Drama.  Duration: 60min (?)
Note: The service should flow without instructions. Stand when instructed on the sheet, sit afterwards. Then after the verse of ‘In the Bleak Mid-winter’ at the end we shall say one of God’s blessing and the very end is sharing God’s peace together. It took 75 minutes including songs – we think you will want to choose your own and insert them as you wish.
Cast:  It needs about 24 people, although we doubled up some parts

Redemption Song

Details
Daniel Carlson
Scripts Since 2007

User Rating: 5 / 5

Summary: A faithful retelling of the Biblical account of Ruth and Naomi. It is clearly be set in the period, but there are self-conscious and unashamed anachronisms in the set and in the script. This will help remind the audience that the ideas and themes of the story are still relevant today (family ties, loyalty, love and loss, displacement, attitudes towards immigrants, faith and hope).
The leitmotiv of music and songs runs through the play. This comes across clearly in both the prologue and epilogue with passing references in the script itself. The original production included a song by Malcolm Guite specially written for the play. Verses were played at key moments between certain scenes, reinforcing the themes, and a couple of them were even sung by Naomi herself.
I haven't included the song here, but I am sure that if anyone else wanted to use the script, Malcolm would be pleased to provide the music and song, too.

Imagine a world where coming to church on Sunday was against the law; where owning a Bible could get you arrested; where sharing the gospel with someone who does not know Jesus could get you killed. Imagine a world where friends and family members could one day simply not come home without any explanation. They just disappear. Where people you think you know could turn out to be informants and betray you. Imagine a world where your property, assets, and belongings can be taken from you without recourse simply because you call yourself a Christian; where the police and government turn a blind eye to your suffering. This is the plight of the persecuted church. This is reality for Christians in places like China, Indonesia, Pakistan, Sudan, Nigeria, Cuba, Saudi Arabia, and many other places.
This play is an attempt to bring into sharp focus the plight of the Christian church. Although the characters and locations are not real, the situations that will be portrayed are based on actual eyewitness accounts that have been reported to Voice of the Martyrs, an organization dedicated to helping the persecuted church through education and relief.
Keywords: Persecution, oppression, martyrs, torture, prison, suffering, witnessing
Style: Heavy (not suitable for children). Duration: 60-90min.
